A view from 1939:
WICKES, (5,165
alt.), mining and smelting camp in the boom days. Wickes boasted
of the first lead-silver smelter in Montana; the plant was dismantled
in the early 1890's. Near Wickes and Corbin are such gold and silver
mines as the Alta, with a reported production record of $32,000,000;
the Gregory, with $9,000,000; the Ninah and the Bertha. Most of
the important production came before1892, but the district is still
regarded as a potential source of silver, lead, zinc, and gold.
