A view from 1939:
CULBERTSON, (1,921 alt., 536 pop.), is a grain-shipping
point, as its large elevators indicate to newcomers. It is
named for Alexander Culbertson, who in 1839 succeeded Kenneth
McKenzie as factor at Fort Union. In 1879 his son
Jack established a ranch near here. Just when or how the town
came into existence is not known, but the theory that there
was a town gained currency between 1888 and 1892. In the latter
year, however, a certain Lucy A. Isbel stepped off the train
and spent some time looking for it. Two log buildings were
not regarded as a town where she came from.
