A view from 1939:
FAIRFIELD, (3,999 alt., 227 pop.), a trimly
built and well cared for village amid acres of grain, is the
trading center of the Greenfield Bench. Before the development
of irrigation, the grass here became scarce in dry summers,
and stockmen were forced to move their herds. Consequently,
the community was long known as "Freeze-out Bench."
